Workshop for Independent media

One of the biggest problems facing reporters, when writing about abortion, is sifting through the contradictory ideas presented as objective information on the subject. Many times, reporters have a hard time finding the facts when facing deadlines. The local hotline organizers, Lesbians and Feminists for the Decriminalization of Abortion, decided to hold a workshop for independant journalists, so that they would have the necessary background information to be able to cover the campaign.

In the independant radio station La Tribu, a group of about 30 independant journalists participated in a workshop to prepare for the press coverage of the hotline campaign. The hotline was presented by a spokesperson, and a biologist spoke about the medical aspects of induced abortion and the use of misoprostol. The journalists were given background materials and time was taken to answer all of their questions.

One of the main objectives of the campaign, aside from making sure that women have the information they need to avoid serious injury from unsafe abortion, is to open the public debate. It is important to recognize safe abortion as a human right, a woman's right, and a public health issue. In Argentina, as in many places, there is a lack of accurate information presented to the public on the issue, and facts and concrete cases are ignored in favor or moral or ethical debates, often influenced by religion, or distorted by medically unsubstantiated or inaccurate information.
