Why pregnancy kills women

About 800 women die from pregnancy-related complications around the world every day. Almost all of these deaths can be prevented.

Why do women die?

Every year 287,000 women die due to pregnancy related causes.  Events that account for 80% of all maternal deaths are:

  • severe bleeding (mostly bleeding after childbirth)

  • infections (usually after childbirth)

  • high blood pressure during pregnancy (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia)

  • unsafe abortion
