Abortion Laws and Policies
Overview
Abortion on request is authorized. Even though there is no explicit abortion law regulating abortions up to 12 weeks, it is clear that these cannot be punished by penal law. It is permitted up to 19 weeks of pregnancy in cases of: rape, incest, “sexual abuse of an adult, a minor or a woman with a mental illness or disability”. It is also permitted in cases of: Foetal impairment or if the pregnancy endangers the woman or person’s physical health, mental health or life. For these cases no limitation regarding the lengths of pregnancy is mentioned in the legal text.
Minors under the age of 18 are required to obtain parental or adult consent for an abortion. Penal law criminalizes women and pregnant people for doing an abortion outside of the legal conditions specified in the law. Also abortion providers and any persons assisting may be criminalized for an abortion outside of the legal conditions specified in the law.
