Now all women living in Chile will know there is a way for a woman do a safe abortion by herself with pills!!.

Chilean feminist organizations have come together to lauch a hotline giving information on how to have a safe abortion using Misoprostol.

Today, Red Mujeres Chile launched the hotline "Aborto: Información Segura", marking the International Day of Action for Women's Health. The lauch took place in the Plaza Constitución, in the center of Santiago, Chile. The hotline will give information about the safe and effective use of Misoprostol to provoke an abortion. In the past weeks, members of the network have been trained in-depth about the use of Misoprostol, and have been working out legal strategies and expanding their support-network to make the hotline as effective as possible.

A press conference was called for 13:30, when a national seminar on gender would be breaking for mid-day. The idea was to take advantage of the seminar, in which abortion was barely mentioned, to highlight that even today abortion is not a topic of discussion in Chilean politics though Chile has one of the highest abortion rates in Latin America.

The activists marched with the banner from the seminar to the Plaza Constitución, located just outside of the main govermental building, La Moneda. Many activists also wore tshirts bearing the hotline number. A spokeswoman read the declaration, pointing out that the information women need in order to carry out their reproductive choices is widely available internationally and needs to be put into the hands of women.

The event was covered by a wide range of national and international press, from television, radio, and print media. Interested women also approached the organizers wanting to get involved in supporting the initiative.

The same day, grafitti bearing the hotline number appeared in Santiago, Concepcion, and Temuco.

By the end of the day, women were already calling the hotline!

Susan from Women on Waves and Sara from CPJ in Ecuador train women from Chile in answering a hotline for safe abortion with misoprostol so that there are no medical or legal risks.

Women from a wide range of feminist organizations came to a training on medical abortion in Santiago. Sara from the Coordinadora Juvenil de Género (CPJ) talked about her experiences with the safe abortion hotline launched in Chile almost a year ago, and Susan talked about Women on Waves, and gave a training on the effective use of Misoprostol. Afterwards, there were many questions and much enthusiasm for a hotline project here in Chile that would give women access to this vital information, while at the same time pushing for the opening of debate on abortion from a more empowered perspective.

Anti-abortion rights groups backed-up by two deputies claim they will try to shut down the Safe abortion hotline.

Deputies Marcelo Forni from the UDI political party, Franisco Chahuan and the "redes de organizaciones por la vida y la familia" (Network of organizations for Life and the Family)
claim they will take action to shut down the safe abortion hotline that was launched yesterday.

Numerous women are already calling the hotline.

To shut down the hotline would be a severe violation of the
constitutional right to freedom of Information.

In Guayaquil, to mark the International Day of Action for Women's Health, there was an action to support the hotline. The banner spreads the hotline number, which has helped more than 1000 women this year.

Hoy a las tres de la tarde, desde lo alto del torreón del faro de la ciudad , un grupo de mujeres ecuatorianas lanzarán una tela gigante con el texto “ABORTO SEGURO
099 004 545”. El objetivo es visibilizar en el Día Internacional de Acción por la Salud de la Mujer, el cual se recuerda cada 28 de mayo, como los temas relacionados a los derechos reproductivos femeninos son excluidos de la agenda del Estado.

Esta acción también pretende difundir el número de la línea telefónica Salud Mujeres (SM) que provee información sobre aborto seguro, sexualidad y anticoncepción a mujeres de todo el país.

El objetivo de Salud Mujeres es compartir información pública -difundida por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y otras instituciones especializadas en salud sexual y reproductiva- sobre cómo interrumpir un embarazo con medicamentos de manera segura.

Con esto, Salud Mujeres ayuda a prevenir la muerte de miles de mujeres ecuatorianas que se enfrentan a abortos practicados clandestinamente en condiciones insalubres.

Desde junio de 2008, la línea de ayuda ha recibido más de mil llamadas solicitando información.

Además SM está estructurada para brindar información y apoyo de manera anónima y gratuita a mujeres de sectores populares, urbanos y rurales; quienes no han recibido ningún tipo de información sobre sexualidad, anticoncepción, diversidad sexual o violencia de género.

A través de Salud Mujeres compartir información de forma amigable porque al ser un servicio telefónico asistido por mujeres se establece una comunicación abierta y efectiva con cada una de las llamadas recibidas diariamente.

Salud Mujeres está constituida por un grupo de activistas feministas jóvenes que comprenden la difícil situación que enfrentan las mujeres que han decidido interrumpir un embarazo no deseado.
